I was lucky enough to be there on the
eve of one of the 2010’s great collaboration production that has become known as Grameen Nurse Institute It started
like this. Nobel Laureate Dr Yunus was on his way to give a talk on social business to 1000 people at Glasgow Caledonian University
when a lifelong friend Zasheem who was linking in Dr Yunus’ Glasgow diary mentioned that Caledonian did a lot of the
training of nurses for the British National Heath Service – why not ask the Principal of Glasgow University if she would
loan Dr Yunus a few people to train some nurses in Bangladesh’s capital city Dhaka. Here are some of the connection
innovations that Dr Yunus has been multiplying in the first 12 months of this concept’s development and imminent launch
:
-5 million
$ funding from Nike Foundation , whose number 1 cause is girl power supported by the Buffett family charity Novo
-the funding will build a free university
in Dhaka with help from social business constructor Grameen Saudi-German hospitals. A free hospital is a social business model
where youth can be trained for free if they spend their first few years of qualified practice in the rural poor areas where
Grameen Bank members (including female microentrepreneurs and their children) live
-Back in 1992 Grameen had started the
social business Kalyan offering members health diagnostics insurance but the bottleneck for expanding this popular franchise across rural Bangladesh
had been trained medical people – which the Grameen Nurse Institute will fill; these nurses in the villages will also
be able to go and visit secondary schools where Grameen members’ children learn and start developing girls first aid
clubs so as to start making nursing one of the excitingly human jobs rural children aspire to grow up doing
This sort of www connections innovation –from UK university to US foundation to developing city training hospital
to local village branch nursing services is a model that 20th Century Global NGOs could not have conceived of because
they specialised in different expert parts not connecting the local to global. Now the model of GNI is so simply mapped, I
can’t see why some of the huge budgets of global medical aid cant be transferred to Free University Nursing Institutes
in any developing country supported by world bank or global charities. Please try rehearsing this story and see how Yes We
Can all celebrate 2010s as the decade of girl power and nursing coming to very village where mothers and children are most
in need
